Isaac Mungai, newly installed Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) chairman and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) youth leader has finally disclosed to the public major reason that frustrated Newton Kariuki Karish path to victory in Mbeere North Parliamentary bid, where he was narrowly edged out by his main opponent Leonard Muriuki Wamuthende who clinched victory.
As per his pronouncement, Newton Kariuki’s unexpected loss was as a result of laxity among in house-loyalists and as a result of Gachagua’s camp disintegrating at the last moments towards the by-election which was held on Thursday 27th, November 2025.
Supporting his remarks, Isaac Mungai indicated that few days before the polls were held, former Attorney General (AG) of Kenya Hon Justin Muturi’s camp had issued a distress call that the government’s machinery which was being led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was too tough for his Democratic Party (DP), and that he needed backup to counter them.
Out of good will, Rigathi Gachagua assembled leaders loyal to him whom he assigned the role of coordinating the ground work, to drum up support for Karish who was being ranked by the opinion polls as the favorite candidate to win the election.
However, the inner circle or rather team of loyalists that Gachagua had assembled let Karish down, as they went to bars to entertain themselves, forgetting the crucial tasks they had been assigned to oversee.
Among the key tasks the leaders had been assigned to oversee included to counter intimidation from hired goons, bribery of voters, violence as well as influence by rogue police officers.
