Bunge La Mwananchi President Calvince Okoth, also known as Gaucho, recently expressed his concerns about the lack of collective support for Luo celebrities in Kenya compared to those from other tribes. During a public address, he highlighted instances where Kenyans had generously contributed to help celebrities facing difficult circumstances, but this support seemed to be lacking when it came to Luo or Luhya celebrities.
Gaucho specifically mentioned two examples of celebrities who received substantial assistance from Kenyans in times of need. One of them is former Tahidi High actor Omosh, who faced financial difficulties, and the other is Moustapha, a rapper based in Mombasa. These individuals experienced significant support through contributions made by Kenyans. However, Gaucho expressed his disappointment that when it came to helping Luo or Luhya celebrities, particularly those whose names started with an ‘O,’ there seemed to be silence and lack of support from the Kenyan community.
Gaucho further elaborated on the challenges faced by Luo celebrities, citing the unfortunate cases of comedians Othuol Othuol and Ochonjo. Othuol Othuol, a talented comedian known for his appearances on the popular Churchill Show, tragically passed away without receiving the level of support he needed during his struggle with illness. Similarly, Ochonjo, an actor from the Inspector Mwala TV series, faced financial difficulties during his illness, making it challenging to cover the costs associated with his burial. Gaucho’s remarks underscored the need for collective support and solidarity among Kenyans, regardless of tribal affiliations, especially during times of crisis for public figures.
Amidst his concerns, Gaucho took the opportunity to praise Mumias East Member of Parliament, Peter Salasya, for his commendable support of struggling artist Stevo Simple Boy. Salasya went above and beyond to assist Stevo Simple Boy by renting a fully furnished apartment for him. Additionally, Salasya promised to provide ongoing financial support for the artist’s music career. This gesture of kindness and generosity showed the impact that individuals in positions of influence can have on the lives of struggling artists.
