President William Ruto has announced a major new initiative that will see officers from the National Youth Service (NYS) undergo basic training in the use of firearms. This new training plan aims to equip NYS officers with essential skills to handle firearms, ensuring they are prepared to protect and respond to security needs across the country.

During a recent pass-out parade of NYS recruits in Gilgil, President Ruto highlighted the importance of this new training program. He directed the Cabinet Secretaries for Interior, Defence, and Public Service to start discussions to implement this change. The goal is to integrate a basic firearms course into the existing paramilitary training that NYS recruits receive.

This decision comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance the capability of the NYS and ensure that its officers are fully prepared for various security challenges. President Ruto stressed that this training will help NYS officers become more effective in their roles and contribute significantly to national security.

Additionally, President Ruto praised the Kenya Wildlife Service for including ex-NYS recruits in their recent recruitment drive, with 447 out of 790 new recruits coming from the NYS. He also set a new target for NYS, directing that the next intake should increase to 20,000 recruits.

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to providing more opportunities for young people and strengthening the capabilities of its security forces.

By introducing firearms training, the NYS will be better equipped to handle security issues and contribute to a safer Kenya.
