Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday cracked mourners during the burial of Kenyan marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum after urging President William Rut to give him two or three days off to attend the Paris 2024 Olympics.

While making his remarks in Keiyo South Constituency, Elgeyo Marakwet Couty, Gachagua joked that he did not know when Ruto chose him as the Deputy President, he did not know that they will be talking matters economy and development all day, week and year long.

“If the president will agree, I will come and join you for two or three days,” Gachagua told the athletes who were present and who will represent the country in Paris.

He added, “I am not sure if he will accept because nowadays his mind has a lot especially on matters economy. He has been pushing some of us to be Economists.”

“The president is my friend but I think he tricked me because when he requested me to be his deputy, I thought I would be his assistant, and not to ensure we are all economists.”

“Now we are talking about economy from morning to evening. Your Excellency, I hope you will allow me to travel to Paris to support our athletes,” said Gachagua amid laughter from the mourners.
