Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has claimed that President William Ruto had long planned to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome for refusing to be compromised. Speaking in an interview, Gachagua alleged that Ruto frequently expressed frustration over Koome’s independent stance, accusing her of being “problematic.”
According to Gachagua, Ruto even confronted him multiple times, blaming him for failing to “manage” Koome and ensure she aligned with the president’s expectations. He suggested that Ruto viewed Koome’s resistance as a challenge to his authority, prompting a scheme to push her out.
These revelations add to the growing tensions between Gachagua and Ruto, further exposing internal power struggles within the government. If true, Gachagua’s claims raise serious concerns about judicial independence and executive interference. His remarks could spark debate on the state of democracy and governance in Kenya as the country approaches the 2027 elections.
