The Standard reports that MPs and leaders in Mount Kenya who back President William Ruto must make a difficult choice on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.
A rift emerges among MPs as efforts to oust Gachagua gain traction; some want to remove him to protect their political future in 2027, while others are worried about the possible fallout.
Some Members of Parliament, especially those from Gachagua’s home region in Mount Kenya, blame him for their diminishing political stature, accusing him of labeling them as collaborators and sellouts, which has hurt their appeal with people.
Proponents of Gachagua’s dismissal contend that their main goal is to improve their political situation in time for the 2027 elections and that acting otherwise would endanger their careers.
He is engaged in a full-scale political conflict with us. He has been so successful in inciting the electorate against us that we are afraid to organize at the local level. Furthermore, he has positioned candidates against us, as if that weren’t enough. That implies that the people will send us home in 2027 if he is not stopped, one MP stated.
“He won’t have the State apparatus to crisscross the Mount Kenya region if he is impeached. He will no longer be a threat to our political careers since he will not run for any official office in the nation. This is a collective motion. It aims to assist those of us who are President William Ruto’s supporters but also his detractors,” the MP, who wished to remain anonymous, stated.
The lawmakers claim that while Gachagua has persons, he lacks leaders who could shield him from the hostility of Parliament.
Though Mount Kenya authorities are adamant about sending Gachagua home, they are afraid their voters will never forgive them, which has led to a deadlock over who will file the impeachment move.
This is in spite of promises that the lawmakers behind the idea will have more state protection to make sure he doesn’t get kidnapped or is convinced not to come to the motion’s tabling.
