Armed bandits in the past
Four suspected Karamojong warriors were killed in a fierce confrontation with Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops during a daring cattle rustling attempt in Uganda’s East Acholi region.
The clash occurred between February 2 and 4 in districts including Kitgum, Abim, and Agago, where armed bandits were caught driving away stolen herds.
UPDF soldiers from the 5 Infantry Division swiftly intervened under the ongoing Dumisha Usalama campaign, aimed at stamping out livestock theft and restoring security in northern Uganda.
In the ensuing exchange of fire, the troops neutralized the four attackers, recovered more than 30 herds of cattle, and seized an AK-47 rifle, several bows and arrows, and mobile phones believed to belong to the raiders.
No UPDF casualties were reported in the operation.
Authorities say the recovered livestock will be returned to rightful owners following verification.
The incident shows persistent challenges in curbing cross-regional cattle raiding, even as the UPDF intensifies patrols and disarmament efforts in Karamoja and neighboring areas.
Military officials vowed continued protection for communities vulnerable to such violent crimes.
Local leaders have welcomed the swift response, calling it a step toward lasting peace in the region long plagued by armed rustling.
