As the year 2023 comes to a closer, GSU Commandant Eliud Lagat is among brhe few Kenyans who can count themselves lucky after winning the trust of President William Ruto.
Dr Ruto who has completed a full year in office, has stamped his authority in the running of the country by picking right-hand men to head sensitive dockets. And the security area is one of them.
In April, Dr Ruto overhauled the security system by picking new men and women to lead specific apparatus. One of them is the paramilitary police unit, the GSU.
After heading the unit for five years since his appointment in 2018, Douglas Kirocho Kanja left Ruaraka GSU headquarters after being appointed as the new Deputy Inspector General of Police in-charge of the Kenya Police Service wing.
At the GSU headquarters, Lagat took over as the new boss. Rightfully, he was back home having started his stellar career as a law enforcer at Ruaraka.
Lagat served in the elite Recce Squad unit as a commando. After that, he switched to Kiambu Road to where he worked for the Directorate of Criminals Investigations.
The highlight of his career as a detective was when he was appointed to head the investigations bureau at the DCI headquarters.
Now in-charge of one of the most dreaded police units in the country, Lagat is very close to power and the central police command. Certainly, 2023 was a very good year for him.
