Raila Odinga, the leader of One Kenya Party, has suffered a serious setback ahead of his scheduled anti-government demonstration on the 20th of this month.
This comes after former police spokesperson Charles Owino joined the ruling United Democratic Alliance UDA party.
According to the source, Owino pledged his support for the administration after meeting with President William Ruto at State House with 30 other leaders from the Nyanza region.
They agreed to collaborate with the Kenya Kwanza government to bring development projects to the people of Nyanza.
Former governors Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Okoth Obado (Migori), and Jack Ranguma led the delegation of around 30 leaders (Kisumu).
Odoyo Owidi, Chairman of Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, and former MPs Martin Ogindo, John Pesa, Rose Nyamunga, Nicholas Gumbo, and Edick Anyanga were among those present.
They stated that they will encourage and mobilize people in the region to support the administration.
On the other hand, One of the parties that had declared that it will not fold and join the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has made a major U-turn, with its leader announcing that he has now agreed to cross over.
There has been calls on the Kenya Kwanza affiliate parties to merge into UDA, efforts kicked off and led by UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.
Among the parties that had rejected the plan was Farmers’ Party, which, however, has now agreed to the plan going by latest reports.
The new development has been confirmed by Malala, who has announced that the parties will enjoy all benefits that come with being in the ruling party.
He made the remarks on Tuesday, while noting that those that will refuse to merge into UDA and opt to remain independent will also be allowed to be.
“Parties have a right to choose where they belong. Some will choose to be independent parties and we will still work with them, some have agreed to join UDA…we welcome them and we will make sure they belong to our party and we will make them officials and members of our party. We have given them a go-ahead to participate in the grassroots election of UDA,” he is quoted by the Daily Nation.
This comes as an interesting u-turn from Farmers’ Party, whose leader Irungu Nyakera had even declared that he will be stupid to merge with UDA.
He pointed out that his party has not gotten anything since it helped Ruto win in August last year, and the calls to dissolve it are funny.
“Six of these parties have never been rewarded with anything for being members of the coalition. The the only message we keep getting is that we should dissolve and join UDA by August. To be honest, we would be very stupid to dissolve our party and get nothing in return,” he told the paper earlier.
