Former Mr Kenya and Maria actor Robert ‘Khula’ Budi and his wife were arrested on Tuesday outside Milimani High Court.
According to K24 TV, they were arrested for allegedly beating and assaulting their seven-year-old daughter at their home in Karen Plains, Langata. The couple had appeared in court for a hearing on a separate case of child neglect and abuse.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the couple had inflicted severe injuries on their daughter, including a broken arm, a fractured rib, and multiple bruises on her body. The DCI said that they had received a tip-off from a concerned neighbour who had witnessed the incident on Sunday night.
The DCI detectives, who had been trailing the couple, attempted to arrest them as they left the court premises, but Budi resisted and put up a fierce fight. The well-built former Mr Kenya, who is known for his role as Khula in the popular TV show Maria, shook off several police officers who had advanced towards him and tried to escape.
However, he was eventually overpowered and handcuffed by the officers, who also arrested his wife. The couple was taken to Karen Police Station, where they were detained awaiting arraignment in court. They are expected to face charges of assault, causing grievous harm, and violating the Children’s Act.
The DCI said that they had rescued the daughter from the couple’s home and taken her to a hospital for treatment. They also said that they had launched investigations into the couple’s history of violence and abuse against their children. The DCI urged the public to report any cases of child abuse or neglect to the nearest police station or call the toll-free number 116.
