Kenyan journalist Eric Njoka recently opened up about a devastating setback in his career an experience that left him grappling with shattered dreams and emotional pain.
Njoka, a former employee of Kenya Television Network (KTN), had been selected for CNN’s prestigious Journalism Fellowship program, an opportunity that would have taken his career to new heights.
However, the chance of a lifetime was abruptly taken from him by a former boss at KTN, leaving a significant impact on both his personal and professional life.
The CNN fellowship program, which included a five-year free visit visa to the United States, was set to be a career-defining opportunity for Njoka.
It promised extensive exposure to global journalism standards and valuable networking experiences.
However, things took an unfortunate turn when Njoka’s immediate supervisor at KTN contacted the program organizers and canceled his trip without his consent.
This unforeseen betrayal was something Njoka never anticipated.
According to Njoka, Turner Studios, the organization managing the fellowship, had informed him that his boss had not only contacted them but also displayed rude and abrasive behavior during discussions about his participation.
Despite attempts to resolve the matter amicably, the fellowship was ultimately revoked, leaving Njoka devastated.
He described the loss as a significant blow to his career ambitions, which could have gained an international edge had he been able to attend.
“I lost such a huge opportunity, which could have added miles to my career path,” Njoka lamented, explaining that he believed jealousy and selfishness played a role in his boss’s actions.
His fast-rising career at the time may have triggered feelings of rivalry or competition, leading to the sabotage.
Njoka speculated that his boss might have wanted the opportunity for themselves or simply resented his success.
