A dismal turnout plagued Nyeri’s Jamhuri Day celebrations, as empty seats could be seen all across Kamukunji Stadium. The event was captured on camera by Citizen TV as the county commissioner read President William Ruto’s speech in his place.

Whether locals departed before the speech was given or boycotted the event is still unknown. Residents have expressed their dissatisfaction with Ruto’s leadership style in response to the seeming lack of engagement.

Some residents told Citizen TV that Kenyans are fed up with hollow promises and accused the president of using threats and chest pounding to govern.

“We’re sick of threats and hollow promises. Before departing the location, one attendee remarked, “The cost of living is unbearable, and instead of solutions, we get lectures.” The poor Kamukunji turnout has sparked discussions about the public’s waning trust in Ruto’s government.

Some argue that the complaints are a result of persistent economic difficulties, while others see it as an indication of growing disenchantment. Uncertainty surrounds the causes for the low turnout, but the vacant chairs at this national event are a clear indication of Kenyans’ growing dissatisfaction.
