It was an embarrassing moment for the Nandi Deputy Governor, Dr. Yulita Cheruiyot, on Thursday during a visit by President William Ruto in Nandi County, Kenya.

The President was on an official tour meant to meet and address locals in the area, including stops in Mosop and Kapsabet where he met residents and took part in events.

During the event, a clip that has been shared widely showed Dr. Cheruiyot being handed a microphone by her team so she could introduce herself and speak to the crowd.

She began to cheer and shout phrases like “Kapsabet hoyee!” and “Fire si fire!” as she tried to energise the people. But instead of cheering back, the crowd waved their hands and looked uncomfortable.

Many people in the audience showed clear signs that they did not want to hear from her. Eventually, she had to step away from the microphone without finishing her speech. The moment left her visibly embarrassed in front of President Ruto and others standing nearby.

Some people watching the video online said the crowd’s reaction looked like rejection, and social media users quickly shared the clip with comments. Others said that political leaders should listen to locals and earn their respect before speaking at public events.

President Ruto was in Nandi County on March 12, 2026, as part of his development tour, where he also visited schools and local communities to speak about government projects and plans.

Local events like this show the challenges politicians sometimes face when engaging with residents, especially during a high‑profile visit with the head of state.
