Mathioya Constituency Member of Parliament, Dr. Edwin Mugo Gichuki, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring accountability in the use of public funds.

Being a member of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), he participated in the scrutiny of financial accounts belonging to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the State Department for Defence.

The scrutiny, conducted for the financial year ending June 2023, followed concerns raised by the Auditor-General regarding expenditures in the two institutions.

Top officials, including EACC Chairperson Dr. David Oginde, CEO Abdi Mohamed, Defence Principal Secretary Hon. Patrick Mariru, and Vice Chief of Defence Forces Lt. Gen. John Mugaravai Omenda, appeared before the committee to respond to audit queries.

The PAC examined EACC’s spending on investigations, legal fees, and asset recovery to determine how effectively the agency is using its resources to fight corruption. Similarly, the Defence Ministry’s procurement processes, infrastructure projects, and operational expenses were reviewed to ensure transparency in the management of national security funds.

During the session, both institutions defended their financial decisions, stating that they had followed legal frameworks. However, the PAC will now analyze their submissions before compiling recommendations to Parliament. The aim is to ensure that public funds are managed responsibly and that any misuse is addressed.

Dr. Mugo, who has been an active advocate for accountability, continues to emphasize the importance of transparency in public spending. His participation in the scrutiny comes amid increasing corruption cases in the country, reinforcing his commitment to protecting taxpayers’ money from mismanagement.

The Public Accounts Committee remains focused on ensuring that all government institutions adhere to proper financial practices, with Parliament expected to take further action based on the committee’s findings.
