The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has withdrawn charges against Azimio One Kenya leaders, who were accused of taking part in an unlawful assembly and causing malicious property damage. The decision would promote dialogue between the government and the opposition.
The leaders who had been charged in court included Ugunja MP James Opiyo Wandayi, Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo, Kilifi South MP Richard Chonga, and Malindi MP Amina Mnyazi. They were discharged by Kahawa Law Court Senior Principal Magistrate Boaz Ombewa, along with co-accused George Yogo Obure and Esther Oromi.
The six were accused of participating in an unlawful assembly together with others who were not before the court. However, the DPP’s decision to drop the charges against them has been seen as a positive step towards fostering dialogue and reconciliation between the government and the opposition.
The move has been welcomed by the accused leaders who expressed their gratitude to the DPP and the court for the decision. They stated that they were looking forward to engaging in constructive dialogue with the government to find solutions to the country’s challenges.
