Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has hit back at claims that he is afraid to visit his Meru over fears of a potential political backlash.
Kindiki was responding to widespread claims that certain politicians allied to President William Ruto have been afraid to return to their backyards especially those from the Mt Kenya region due to the unpopular nature of Ruto’s government.
He responded to the claim on Friday, February 28 2025, while addressing grassroots leaders from Embu, Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties at his Irundune Home in Tharaka Nithi County.
In his defence, he explained that he has been held up with matters of governance as a high-ranking official of the government.
“Watu fulani wanasema wengine hawataki kuonekana nyumbani. They should know we are proud members of this community and we are proud Kenyans at the same time. As you are aware many of you, we have not seen each other for some time now.
“For the last two years, I’ve been interior minister, that assignment took me away for the last two years I was rarely able to have a meeting like this,” he said.
Homecoming
The DP further hinted at plans for his official homecoming, which he says will be an even bigger function in weeks to come.
“So wale walikuwa wakiuliza siku ntaenda nyumbani, a home coming event is coming soon. They will be shocked for we will be many. For those who ask it is coming soon tutajaa kujaa.
The whole country will come to join us, for the position I hold is for Kenya. Expect to see our friends from across the country when the event happens in a few weeks, he said.
The DP also took a swipe at the government detractors over claims of misrepresenting the promise the government made to Kenyans.
“Many have been inciting people by claiming that President Ruto has done nothing since his election. That is not true. When Ruto came into power, the country was in a precarious state due to the effects of COVID-19. For the past two years, the president has worked hard to stabilize the economy and get to issues that bring money to pockets of people. I want to say when the president promised things he never for once said that they would be done in a week, a day or a month. He said he would do them if elected between 2022 to 2027,” he clarified.
Kindiki said the government is in line to fulfil the promises made: “We are on course to fulfil the pledges we made, he concluded.
