Donald Trump says he was not surprised to come under attack from “liberal movie people” like Meryl Streep at last night Golden Globe awards.
Meryl Streep berated the President elect in her speech accepting an award, saying his apparent mocking of a disabled New York Times reporter broke her heart.
Trump dismissed the Hollywood legend as a Hillary lover.Ms Streep took aim at a speech Mr Trump gave in November 2015, during which he appeared to mock a reporter who had written a negative story about him.
He was accused of attacking New York Times journalist Serge F Kovaleski after he disputed claims that Trump witnessed thousands of people cheering as they watched the World Trade Center fall 14 years ago.
Kovaleski was born with a chronic condition known as arthrogryposis that affects the movement in his arms and causes his joints to stiffen.
In the speech, Trump puts on a voice and lifts his hands in the air, apparently imitating journalist Serge Kovaleski.
He says: “Now the poor guy, you gotta see this guy, Uh, I don’t know what I said. I don’t remember. He’s going, I don’t remember. Maybe that’s what I said”

Last night, Ms Streep said of the incident: “There was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart. Not because it was good; there was nothing good about it. But it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh, and show their teeth.”
“It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter. It broke my heart when I saw it and I still can’t get it out of my head.
“It wasn’t in a movie, it was real life. Disrespect invites disrespect, violence incites violence. When powerful people use their position to bully others we all lose.”
In a phone interview with the New York Times, last night, Trump said he was not surprised to come under attack from liberal movie people.
He said: “People keep saying I intended to mock the reporter’s disability, as if Meryl Streep and others could read my mind, and I did no such thing.
“And remember, Meryl Streep introduced Hillary Clinton at her convention, and a lot of these people supported Hillary.”
He went further on Twitter this morning, describing Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for more Academy Awards than any other actor, as “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood”.
