Before travelling to the United States to attend the UN General Assembly, the Head of State will make a stopover in the Caribbean country.
President Ruto will meet with members of the Presidential Council during his visit to Haiti, according to people with knowledge of the plans.
Later, he would visit the 400 Kenyan soldiers stationed in the Caribbean country as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission.
A few months ago, Kenya sent policemen to Haiti to head an international team that was helping the local police force there.
This is when President Ruto is visiting. A new arrangement for the mission at the UN is being considered by the US as a result of the mission’s financial overruns and logistical issues.
Nonetheless, Garry Conille, the prime minister of Haiti, left the nation to attend the 79th UN General Assembly in the United States just hours before his visit.
Ruto’s diplomatic visit also follows days after the Head of the Peacekeepers, Godfrey Otunge announced major progress in the mission to eradicate gang violence. In a presser, Otunge revealed that the Kenyan Police, jointly with Haitian officers undertook security patrols within the streets of Delmas last week, during which several gang members were arrested.
According to the police boss, among those cornered during the raid included two “Chen Mechan and Pierre 6” gang leaders.
Several streets in Delmas are among the important sites that the joint operations have been able to retake and keep dominance patrols in, according to Otunge.
