Mutahi Kagwe was once one of the most popular figures in the former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee Government. Thrust into the limelight at the height of COVID-19 pandemic, he became the face of the government’s fight against the disease which brought the world to a standstill.

The former Nyeri County Senator had been picked by Uhuru to steer the crucial health docket. He took over from Sicily Kariuki who had been moved to the water and irrigation ministry.

The appointment of Kagwe would later be hailed as one of the smartest decisions ever met by Uhuru. The minister would be praised all over the world for his handling of COVID-19 pandemic. But even with this outstanding performance, he was not retained by President William Ruto when he tool over power.

Kagwe had previously served as Nyeri senator from 2013 to 2017 when he lost the race for Governor.

Before that, Kagwe had served under the late former President Mwai Kibaki where he was information and communication minister. His tenure in the ministry is seen as a success story. It was during his time at the docket that M-PESA was invented.

The University of Nairobi Bachelor of Commerce graduate is a former Mukuruweini MP. He served for one term before losing to Kabando wa Kabando in 2007.

After being edged out of the Ruto adminstration, Kagwe went back to his roots- private practice in the field of consultancy.

It was there that he made a name for himself before plunging into the murky world of politics in 2002. Kagwe is a renowned Public Relations consultant. In a recent interview with one of the local dailies, the former CS revealed that he was enjoying his new occupation. But in future, when the right time comes, he will hit the political terrain once again.
