Former Jubilee Vice Chairperson David Murathe delivered an emotional tribute to the late former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo during a memorial service held on Saturday, at CITAM Valley Road.Speaking to mourners, Murathe recounted his last conversation with Jirongo, which took place just a day before the tragic crash that claimed the politician’s life.
He recounted exchanging light-hearted messages and holiday greetings through one of Jirongo’s fake Facebook accounts.
“He humorously remarked that someone who had received the coronavirus vaccine, did not drink alcohol, or smoke could still die unexpectedly. I found it amusing, and we shared our greetings.
That was the last time we spoke,” Murathe recalled, his voice filled with emotion.
Reflecting on Jirongo’s death, Murathe pointed out that while discussions about the circumstances of his passing would continue, it was ultimately part of life’s unpredictable essence.
“Death arrives in various ways—whether through old age, illness, or accidents. But God has taken a hero from us,” he stated.
Murathe also underscored Jirongo’s substantial role in shaping Kenya’s political environment. He credited the late politician with influencing the succession process that led to Uhuru Kenyatta becoming the nation’s fourth president.
Additionally, Murathe portrayed Jirongo as a visionary leader with a global outlook.
He mentioned that leading up to his untimely death, Jirongo had been actively engaged in significant development initiatives in Uganda and Libya, demonstrating his commitment to turning visionary ideas into concrete outcomes.
Those at the memorial service remarked that Murathe’s remarks served as a poignant reminder of Jirongo’s influence both in Kenya, around the world.
Beyond his political legacy, Jirongo was honored for his intellectual curiosity, strategic mindset, and relentless efforts to shape the future of Kenya.
