The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has called for nationwide demonstrations in response to President Ruto’s recent verbal criticisms of the Judiciary. In a press briefing on Wednesday, the LSK strongly condemned the president’s remarks, accusing him of unfairly linking the courts with cartels and expressing concerns about potential implications for the integrity of the Judiciary.

The Kenya Judges and Magistrates Association also expressed disapproval of Ruto’s statements, asserting that his defiance of court orders undermines the Constitution and encroaches on the independence of the Judiciary.

Leaders, including Fredrick Okanga, KANU Secretary for Political Affairs, urged the LSK to take decisive action against Ruto, claiming that the President’s actions pose a threat to the autonomy of the Judiciary. Okanga questioned the whereabouts of Chief Justice Martha Koome and the president of the Law Society of Kenya, urging them to stand firm against what he perceived as threats to the Judiciary by the executive.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, along with other lawyers and opposition figures, echoed the criticism against Ruto, expressing deep concerns about potential challenges to the Judiciary’s independence originating from the executive branch. The collective call for nationwide protests underscores the serious apprehensions among legal professionals and political leaders regarding the perceived jeopardizing of the Judiciary’s autonomy.
