Starehe MP Jaguar on Tuesday stirred the crowd to sing his popular Kigeugeu song during United Democratic Alliance (UDA) National Delegates Convention at Kasarani.
The highly-charged crowd belted out the song’s chorus and began chanting Uhuru’s name.
“Ni nyinyi mmesema, si mimi,” said Jaguar, perhaps to absolve himself from any blame.
Music has played a significant role in politics, especially during election period and this year is no exception.
First came Raila Odinga with Leo ni Leo, a rendition of the popular Lelo ni Lelo by Benga composer, instrumentalist and singer Emmanuel Musindi.
Lelo ni Lelo translates to ‘leo ni leo’ a Swahili phrase that means to “today is the day” – a rallying call to action.
UDA Presidential aspirant and Deputy President William Ruto has not been left behind as his voice was incorporated in the popular Sipangwingwi track by Exray.
While performing on Tuesday, Exray invited the DP to sing along.
“Siwezi pangwa na system… kura zote napea hustler… sipangwingwi” sang Exray in a rendition of the song.
As the popular chorus was about to hit, the DP joined in with his popular ad lib ‘Mboka ni Mboka’ then did his own version .. ‘yaani tuanze hapa bottom halafu twende up… kila mtu from bottom twende up’ sang Ruto while popularizing his bottom-up narrative.
Fast-rising musician Iyanii behind the Leta Pombe hit was also invited to the podium as he introduced new lyrics to the crowd in a song titled Leta Pesa.
“Above the head, below the belly, across the counties, smooch those monies,” he sang, much to the delight of the delegates.
