Chief Justice of Kenya and the President of the Judiciary has been forced to respond quickly after reports she has drafted key bills which she has sent to the National Assembly for approval.
In a statement, Chief Justice Martha Koome through the Judiciary has termed such reports as misleading and that the correct position is that the Draft Amendment Bills were developed by the National Council on the Administration of Justice, NCAJ through the National Committee on Criminal Justice Reforms , NCCJR following extensive stakeholder engagement for over 3 years.
The statement says that Chief Justice in her capacity as the Chairperson of fhf NCAJ abg accompanied by the chairperson of the NCCJR appellate judge Grace Ngenye and NCAJ staff during a meeting with the speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, had submitted the bills for consideration.
Among the bills , the body wants the government to scrap the life sentence and reduce murder conviction to 30 years. The body also want prostitution legalized.
