In a significant development within Kenya’s media landscape, seasoned Citizen TV anchor Hassan Mugambi is set to depart from Royal Media Services (RMS) to embark on a new journey in the public sector. Mugambi, renowned for his contributions in crime and investigative journalism, will transition to a role at the Ministry of Defence, serving as a communication advisor at Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s office.
Sources privy to the matter disclosed that Mugambi is currently in the process of serving his notice, with his official commencement in the new role scheduled for March. His departure marks the end of a noteworthy tenure at Citizen TV, where he ascended from a reporter to a prominent Swahili news anchor. Notably, Mugambi’s versatile skill set extended to anchoring news shows such as “Sema na Citizen” alongside Lulu Hassan on Fridays.
The impending exit of Mugambi from Citizen TV follows closely on the heels of fellow journalist Chemutai Goin’s announcement of departure from the same media house. Goin, a political reporter, is slated to join National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s office, signaling a significant shift in career trajectories among Kenya’s media personalities.
Mugambi’s decision to transition into a governmental role underscores the evolving dynamics within Kenya’s media landscape, where journalists are increasingly venturing into public service positions. While Mugambi’s departure represents a loss for Citizen TV, the station has been actively replenishing its talent pool by recruiting journalists from other media houses.
Recent additions to Citizen TV’s lineup include business anchor Jimmy Mbogoh and Jasmine Wambui, both of whom were poached from Standard Media Group’s KTN News. The influx of new talent aims to mitigate the impact of departures such as Mugambi’s and reflects the station’s commitment to delivering high-quality journalism amidst personnel changes.
