Today, social media X have been abuzz with fiery exchanges between the former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, and several prominent Kenyan figures. This intense debate was triggered by Chebukati’s assertion that the 2022 general elections, conducted under his leadership, were the “most freest, fairest, and most credible” in Kenya’s history.
Ekuro Aukot, who was notably disqualified from vying in the 2022 presidential elections by the IEBC, was among the foremost critics of Chebukati’s statement.
Aukot openly challenged Chebukati’s integrity, describing the former chairman as “fake.” He argued that the nomination process for the presidential candidates was choreographed and implied that Chebukati lacked a basic understanding of the country’s constitutional provisions.
Aukot, not mincing his words, ridiculed the former IEBC chairman, telling him that when history shall be penned down, Chebukati will hold the unenviable title of the most biased and least competent chairman the IEBC has ever had.
Chebukati, known for his resilience, was quick to respond to Aukot’s remarks. In a sharp retort, he accused Aukot of harboring bitterness, stemming from his inability to meet the stipulated requirements to run for the presidency in 2022. “You did not meet the requirements to stand as a presidential candidate in 2022, period,” Chebukati fired back in his tweet.
While some concurred with Chebukati’s assessment of the 2022 elections, others were more critical, echoing Aukot’s sentiments.
