Police in Butula, Busia County had a hard time preventing locals from siphoning fuel after a tanker overturned.
The officers told Citizen Digital that the driver of the fuel tanker lost control of the vehicle on the Kisumu-Busia road.
The incident at Rakite area happened just a few meters from the police station.
It is alleged that the driver of the tanker was speeding towards the Kenya-Uganda border town.
“He failed to control the vehicle before it overturned by the roadside, with citizens already gathering with containers ready to siphon the fuel,” witnesses said.
Back in 2021, a deadly explosion in Malanga area on the Kisumu-Busia highway left 13 people dead.
This is after an overturned petrol tanker exploded as locals were siphoning fuel.
