A popular medical doctor has left netizens in an uncomfortable puzzlement after making a controversial tweet immediately after performing a successful caesarian section (C-Section).
Mbiti Mwondi, who is popular on social media site X, left the internet in outrage after revealing that he had just performed a C-Section on a mother (carrying a boy and a girl) and confessing to having intentionally extracted the baby boy first so that ‘he’d be called the elder of the two’.
In a tweet which left many utterly astounded, Mwondi confessed that his choice to give the baby boy the first birth preference was based on his desire to root for the ‘boy child’.
“A few minutes ago 2:00 am in theatre via CS, I just extracted the most beautiful twins I have ever seen; a boy and girl. I intentionally extracted the baby boy first so that he’d be called the elder one of the two. Boy child for boy child. Couldn’t help but ask the mum to consent…” he tweeted, while attaching a photo of the newborn twins, whose faces he covered up.
Mwondi’s tweet was immediately labelled highly inappropriate, especially for a doctor, seeing that he not only confessed to having practised a potential malpractice but had also not just attached a photo of the newborns but also injected a rather biased opinion on a baby he helped bring to the world.
Thousands who viewed the tweet – which he later deleted – unreservedly castigated the doctor, citing several wrongdoings he had committed during and after the delicate surgery.
The condemnation echoed worldwide, with an Ireland-based doctor even chiming in, calling out Mwondi for his apparent recklessness.
A displeased Dr. Yusuf Mahat said, “You can’t possibly choose who to extract first. You always start with the presenting twin. Reaching out to extract a boy who might be far away can cause serious maternal-foetal harm.”
He added, “Let’s be cautious and maintain the dignity of our profession. Especially now that there’s turmoil! Choosing who to extract first is not a MEDICAL decision. Sad!”
X influencer @Asamoh was also unimpressed, he said: “These young doctors need mentorship. They are too excited to the extent they don’t understand the boundary between Twitter clout and medical ethics. @mbiti_mwondi we will call you out on this. We are guided by intellectual honesty!”
Another X user posted, “The intellectual collapse of our society. A mature doctor with all these qualifications and (claims to be) philosophically grounded is so desperately needy for attention of the indolent that he can use the miracle of childbirth and innocent babies to entertain degenerates. SMH!”
On her part, Wangari Grace said, “We see the impact of personal beliefs on quality of care across the global. Even in Kenya, we have anecdotal accounts on how care services are affected when medics impose their beliefs on patients.”
Following the sustained criticism, Mwondi deleted his initial tweet, following it up with a sort of explanation meant to downplay his wisecracks, blaming ‘women’s perspective’ for the misunderstanding.
“Apparently, shida sio the fact that I took them photos after a beautiful experience with the mum which she consented ni the fact that I said jokingly I extracted the boy child first,” he said.
“I think it’s more of cultural incompetence at play. Now I understand women’s perspective but those woke feministic men who yearn political and cultural correctness are the problem.”
According to his LinkedIn profile, Mwondi is a medical officer at the St. Damiano Mission Hospital in Bungoma.
