Jubilee faction in Nairobi has announced its decision not to participate in the mass action protests planned by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the city.
According to the Jubilee Nairobi Branch Chair, Mark Ndung’u, the faction is concerned that civil action may lead to a disruption of the ease of doing business in the capital city.
Ndung’u has urged Odinga to call off the protests or guarantee the safety of businesses, especially in the central business district.
He has also warned the party leader, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, of potential property destruction during the protests, stating that if there is any theft of property, deaths or violence during the protests, they will march to Kenyatta’s investments and disrupt his business.
“The amount of loss incurred during the mass action protests is in the public domain. Protests undermine the ease and freedom of doing business and we will not allow that,” Ndung’u stated.
The decision by the Jubilee faction not to participate in the protests is a significant blow to Odinga’s planned protests, which aim to push for electoral justice and reform. The former premier has previously stated that mass action was necessary to achieve change and has called for peaceful protests.
The planned protests have been met with mixed reactions, with some groups expressing support while others, including the Jubilee faction, expressing concern over the potential disruption to businesses and the economy. It remains to be seen how the protests will unfold, and whether they will lead to any meaningful change in the country.
