Pastor Dorcas Gachagua revealed how she had tried to commit suicide by bypassing the security of the late president Daniel Moi while she was a university student. Whilst on a visit to Kabarnet Gardens, her mental health issues had reached a peak, and she wanted the president’s security to shoot her dead.
Fortunately for her, the president listened to her and provided care and comfort. This served as a turning point in her life, and she feels that more attention should be paid to the mental health of the boy child who often bears the burden of a broken home.
At a Mental Health Forum held on June 2, 2023 at the Mwai Kibaki Convention Centre and hosted by Mount Kenya University and attended by students from Thika and its environs, the Second Lady continued to speak out about this issue, insisting that she would not stop talking about it and that society should treat the boy child with honour.
Additionally, Counseling Psychologist and Educationist,Dr. Jane Nyutu, adviced the youths on how to wisely consume things like social media, influencers, and the internet in general, to prevent them from developing mental health issues. This forum is just one of many such initiatives that are making attempts to reduce the alarming suicide rates among young Kenyans.
