Let it go on record that, “by the time a man realises that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong.” But one area fathers can’t go wrong in is spending time bonding with their sons. The Nairobian looks at activities Baba Mtu can enjoy with the son every single day.

1. Nyama choma at home
Nothing is more manly than a father and son roasting meat in the backyard on a Saturday afternoon. When the long-suffering wife goes to have her cornrows done at Urembo Nayo Salon & Cosmetics, she would be pleasantly surprised to find her ‘boys’ have prepared a feast of succulent nyam chom that goes really well with the half-cooked ugali.

2. PlayStation, Fifa
You don’t have to win. You already won any way when you convinced the mother to marry a loser like you. Let your son win most of the matches as you play Fifa on PlayStation the whole day.

3. Road trip!

Nothing is as therapeutic as a long drive to nowhere, listening to your favourite songs with your son. When you get out of town limits on, say Magadi Road, away from the hawk-eyed cops, you can let the small man take the wheels, under your watchful eye of course. You know what, even stepping out and just peeing on the tyres together could bring you very close!

4. Roller-skates
Hire roller skates for an hour and have fun as you watch him tumble and man up until he gets the hang of it. If you can afford it, go ice skating. Your son will remember it for years.

5. Car shopping

Men and machines are blood brothers. You can spend hours with your son admiring and test driving cars which you can never afford in two life times. So, walk into DT Dobie and if you look decent enough, they might just let you have a spin in the low-flying aircraft that is Mercedes S600.

6. DIY weekend
Dismantle a motorcycle engine and put it back. Fix and clean the beloved family car, or do general maintenance around the house. Teach your son the difference between the Allen Key and spanner sizes 14 and 16, you don’t want him thinking that the only important number in life is 69!

7. Little boss man
Bring your son to work during the weekends. Many businessmen, especially the Shahs and Patels, spend quality time with their sons running the family business. Those in employment can have their sons accompany them to the office to see where daddy slaves for their fees.

8. Swim in the river
Swimming in the pool is totally different from taking a dip in River Nyando or River Mathioya. All you town guys, next time you visit your shagz, teach the little one how to swim in the river, even if he’ll have to be uchi wa myama. There is something about battling with the elements without a floater or lifeguard in sight.

9. Outdoor adventure

Nothing bonds sons and fathers as playing a game, and winning. You can go to Jamhuri Park for GP Karting, or enjoy a game of beach volley with overweight and sun burnt odieros at the coast. You may also go hiking in Ngong’, walk in Karura Forest, register for the Mater Heart Run, or take a break ‘mummy’ and go watch English Premier League or Formula 1 at a club.

10. Roll kwa nyasi
Due to budgetary constraints, the hoi polloi might as well roll in the grass at Uhuru Park, in shagz or in the backyard and make do with grass burn. It is such fun too!
