Pastor Ezekiel Odero faced a setback as the court rejected his plea to suspend the closure of his New Life Prayer Center and Church in Kilifi. The High Court decided not to grant the order for suspension that would have halted the deregistration by the Registrar of Societies, noting that the basis for the request was unfounded.

Justice Jairus Ngaah, while acknowledging the urgency of the matter, instructed Pastor Odero to serve his legal documents on both the registrar and the Attorney General, who are the respondents in the case. The Judge stated, “The prayer for the order is grounded on a non-existent premise. For this reason, the prayer of stay is refused.”

The Registrar of Societies and the Attorney General have been given a seven-day period to submit their responses to Odero’s application. The case is set to be mentioned on September 5th for further directions.

In his court submissions, Pastor Odero contended that he was not given an opportunity to defend himself or his church prior to the Registrar of Societies’ decision to deregister New Life Prayer Centre and Church. He pleaded for the decision to be overturned, arguing that it infringed on his congregation’s freedom of worship. Unfortunately, this plea was denied.

Odero expressed his frustration in his court papers, alleging a series of attempts by state entities to persecute him and obstruct his ministry. He claimed that not only was the New Life Prayer Centre & Church being targeted for shutdown, but all his other projects as well.
