Raila Odinga’s bid to become chairman of the AU Commission is probably going to fall through after the AU Permanent Representative Committee drafts new regulations for the upcoming elections that are set for February of 2025. Our sources claim that the committee’s members now want to prevent Member States from running for office in the elections that they had held from 2002 onward as chair and deputy chair.

Since Kenya and Rwanda have already held the deputy position, no one from those countries is permitted to run. This could seriously harm Odinga.

This follows the opposition leader’s earlier trips to Namibia and Uganda to lobby their leaders, as well as the start of his campaign for the presidency of the African Union. Fortunately, he also has the backing of President William Ruto of Kenya, who has been assisting him in lobbying other African leaders.
