Azimio Coalition is expected to stage another massive protest over the week as the push against the Kenya Kwanza administration gains momentum. The alliance had earlier on announced that the protests will be held on Wednesday but later rescheduled it so that it can take place on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday beginning next week.
This latest development seems to have angered the Kenya Kwanza administration with president William Ruto now vowing to deal with anyone who will participate in anyway. While speaking today, Ruto warned that his government will not allow any more deaths and destruction of properties of Kenyans going forward.
Following his warnings, it has now emerged that some members of Parliament allied to Azimio Coalition have been forced into hiding after it emerged that they were risking being arrested. This comes after the interior CS Professor Kithure Kindiki yesterday revealed that they have a list of over 300 people who were involved in the Wednesday protest including members of Parliament.
The demonstrations called by Opposition Leader Raila Odinga and which the government has claimed were facilitated by ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta, left at least nine people dead and property worth millions destroyed and looted.
According to The Star, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau is among those who were detained for grilling on Wednesday night before he was released amid claims by the opposition that former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya was also arrested on Thursday. The latest development has revealed that a number of MPs have since gone into hiding with phones switched off to avoid being tracked by police.
“I can confirm that fear is palpable and most of us are not sleeping in our known addresses,” an ODM MP, who claimed he is earmarked for arrest, told the Star by a different telephone number.
The Star also established that another MP on the police radar has gone into hiding after he suspected that police were trailing him on Thursday night.
“They kept following me in two unmarked cars as I drove home. I decided to get into a mall and exit with a taxi through the backdoor. I am now out of their reach for now,” he told the Star from his hideout.
While announcing the protest day, Raila Odinga revealed that they are aware that the government was planning to arrest several leaders allied to the Azimio Coalition but said that will not prevent them from doing what they have to do. He however warned the government that even if they arrest anyone of them, new blood will emerge and continue with the fight to the end.
“We will have countrywide protests next week on Wednesday whether the government likes it or not,” Raila said.
