The Azimio La Umoja Coalition principal Martha Karua has now issued a statement to Kenyans on Wednesday evening amid the ongoing demonstrations.
Taking to her social media handles, Karua has condemned the extreme use of force by Police officers on ‘peaceful’ protestors in several parts of the country as well as arrests of senior politicians in the coalition, which she has termed to be illegal.
She has argued that the arrests of Embakasi East MP Hon Babu Owino, Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga and the speaker of Kilifi county Hon Teddy Mwambire are all illegal and should stop with immediate effect.
She has also noted that police have abducted a number of Azimio top guns including Raila Odinga’s bodyguard and a number of MCAs to unknown destinations.
Asking the police to shun down the intimidation being directed to the Azimio coalition, Karua added that they’ll not shy away from exercising their constitutional right to assemble, picket and demonstrate.
She has further noted that Azimio lawyers have been dispatched to file lawsuits against the police over the aforementioned arrests and abductions as well as use of excessive force on protestors, especially in Kisii, Mathare, Embakasi, Kisumu, Kamukunji, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kibra.
It should however be noted that the opposition boss Raila Odinga is yet to make any public appearance today nor speak about the ongoing demonstrations.
