According to a Kiswahili newspaper, flood victims in Bunyala, Busia county, have been complaining about an upsurge in promiscuity in the makeshift camps where they are residing.

The county’s floods have left almost 600 households without a place to live. Young girls have been reporting that men have abused them, and they are afraid that these activities could result in early pregnancy and STDs.

In Busia, married couples claimed that the state of affairs directly jeopardizes their marriages. They identified a significant barrier to making love.

Married couples complain of lacking time to engage in love making with their spouses due to the lack of appropriate environments for such activities.

Since parents have to sleep in rooms that also house their children, they have been complaining about the extended period of abstinence.

“In these camps, we are going through a really trying time. We are being harassed by adult men. One of the girls in the camps said, “Many of us will leave these camps with pregnancies, children, diseases, or all of these.”

According to James Matheri, these problems are now a big concern for a lot of families and could be the reason why some of them end up divorcing.
