Felista Nyamathira Njoroge was thrust into the limelight a few weeks ago when it was revealed that her bank account held a mammoth Ksh 102 million.
Sleuths in the Asset Recovery Agency were concerned about how the 21-year-old university student had been able to obtain such a large sum.
So the agency asked the government to freeze the accounts as they explored the source of the funds. Felista has claimed all this time that she was given the money by her wealthy Belgian boyfriend, Marc De Mesel, a claim that he corroborated himself.
But it seems that the agency isn’t buying that story, something that has forced Felista to take the matter to court to unfreeze the account.
The Nairobi Technical Institute student argued that the money came from legitimate and legal sources and not from a nefarious entity.
Through her lawyer Thomas Maosa, Felista claims that the Asset Recovery Agency (ARA) is being malicious, saying they didn’t seek her side of the story before they sought an explanation from her, regarding the funds in her account.
During Wednesday’s application on the matter, ARA lawyer Mohammed Adow said that the agency wasn’t able to proceed as they hadn’t yet filed a formal response.
Patrick Lumumba who was representing Felista refuted the argument saying that he took the student to ARA offices for purposes of writing a statement but nothing had happened.
ââŚtheir request to the respondents for purposes of taking a statement, they chose not to do that and they indicated there was a problem of representation that has been sorted out, and therefore it is not correct for Adow to come to court this morning after a week to say that he is not ready to proceed,â said Prof. Lumumba.
The court then said that the matter should be brought up on January 26th, 2022.
