Earlier this year in March, legendary RnB singer Anita Baker asked fans to stop buying or streaming music online following a battle to regain her masters.
Baker disclosed she was fighting her label for her rightfully-owed masters that were not still not in her possession.
Referencing copyright reversion, which is an artists’ ability to regain copyright of their work after an allotted period of time, Baker said she was prepared to fight for her recordings. As she should.
“They no longer ‘Own’ My Name & Likeness,” she wrote. “And, by Law…30 yr old, Mstrs are 2B Returned, 2 Me.”
Masters recordings aren’t owned by artists initially because record labels finance the money to produce and promote the album and artists are paid via record sales.
No she has has given fans the green light to stream her music again after resolving master recordings issue and wrote wrote, “All My Children Are Coming Home…Catalog. Impossible Things Happen… Every. Single. Day. Gratefully.” with a photo of her five albums.
