Angolan President João Lourenço has assumed the chairmanship of the African Union (AU), taking over from Mauritania’s Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, who held the position since February 2024. Lourenço’s tenure, effective February 15, 2025, will last for one year, in line with AU regulations. He will be supported by vice chairs from Burundi, Ghana, and Tanzania, serving as first, second, and third vice chairs respectively, while Mauritania will act as the rapporteur for the term.
In his acceptance speech at the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, President Lourenço outlined his priorities for the continent. He emphasized the need to enhance infrastructure, including the development of airports, ports, and railways, as well as improving power supply. Additionally, he addressed pressing issues such as conflicts, terrorism, climate change, and disease outbreaks like Marburg, Ebola, and cholera.
The AU chairmanship rotates annually among Africa’s five geographical regions, and this marks Angola’s first time assuming the role. President Lourenço’s leadership comes at a critical time, with the continent facing numerous challenges that require coordinated efforts and robust policies. His commitment to infrastructure development and addressing security and health crises reflects a comprehensive approach to fostering growth and stability across Africa.
As the new AU chairperson, President Lourenço’s agenda aligns with the AU’s theme for the year: “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations.” This focus underscores the organization’s dedication to addressing historical injustices and promoting equitable development for all African communities.
President Lourenço’s extensive political experience, including his tenure as Angola’s Minister of Defense and his role in regional peace initiatives, positions him well to steer the African Union towards achieving its strategic objectives during his chairmanship.
