President William Samoei Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza administration suffered a setback after the high court suspended the implementation of the Finance Bill Act 2023. Two courts suspended the implementation of the Finance Act after Busia County Senator Hon Okiya Omtata and the Law Society of Kenya filed petitions respectively challenging the implementation of the bill.

While speaking from Elgeiyo Marakwet County, Senate Leader of Majority Hon Aaron Cheruiyot criticized the judges after they suspended the implementation of the Finance Bill. He said that he has heard rumors that the Senate is the one that sponsored Okiyah Omtata’s petition.

He dismissed the allegations saying that the Senate has no problem with the Finance Bill. He also added that Okiya Omtata went to court as an individual and no one especially from the Senate backed him.

He also said that Kenya collects revenue of Ksh 30 billion in excess daily and the government is now set to lose Ksh 300 billion for the days that the Finance Bill has been suspended. He wondered how the government is going to recover the funds.

“Kenya collects in excess of KSh60 billion every day… Today is July 1st. The court stopped the implementation of the Finance Act 2023 until July 5. We will lose in excess of KSh300 billion. How are we going to recover that money?” He said.
