Families of the Kenya Defence Forces officers who die in the line of duty are paid lucrative amounts as compensation following tragic loss of their loved ones.

Recently, while responding to questions raised by Senators, the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Defence Hon Aden Duale revealed that the amounts paid to the beneficiaries and families of the officers vary depending on whether one was serving within the country or outside.

According to the CS, if the KDF officer was serving within Kenya, upon his demise while in service, his family immediately gets a whopping Ksh.4M; above his pension which has a component called Death Gratuity. The sum under the KDF Death Gratuity is designed to assist surviving family members with immediate expenses and readjustment.

If the officer was serving in African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) like in Somalia, apart from the Ksh.4M, the AU and UN give that family $50,000 which is currently approximated as Ksh.7M, making the total amount in compensation Ksh 11 million.

The families of the KDF officers also receive counselling and psychological support services to assist service personnel and them in coping with loss and grief.
