Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been at the center of attention following the tabling of an impeachment motion against him. Since the National Assembly passed the motion, Gachagua has stayed out of the public eye, reportedly focusing on gathering evidence to present to the Senate.

According to The Standard newspaper, insiders suggest that the fallout between Gachagua and President William Ruto began when Gachagua allegedly overstepped his boundaries after gaining power.

Sources indicate that Ruto initially turned to Gachagua when he was in a vulnerable position, struggling for financial support during the campaign period due to a lack of funds from then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Although many preferred Prof. Kithure Kindiki as Ruto’s running mate, Gachagua ultimately got the nod because he offered crucial financial backing, reportedly contributing Ksh. 2 billion to the campaign.

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, a close ally of President Ruto and a vocal critic of Gachagua, claims that the rift between the two was primarily caused by the misuse of funds allocated to a confidential vote in the Deputy President’s office.

“After coming into power, Gachagua aimed higher than his position allowed. Critics now believe he was trying to recover his campaign investment quickly, rather than being satisfied with his role, and this sparked the conflict with President Ruto,” a source revealed.
