Attorney General Justin Muturi will now lose power as the government now purposes to hand head of state President William Ruto power on custody of public seal.

While appearing before Justice and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly chaired by Tharaka MP George Murugaru, the Secretary to the Cabinet Ms. Mercy Wanjau, has today presented her submissions on the Office of the Attorney General Act, 2012 to the Joint Committee.

In her submission to the committee, she has argued that the President is usually the custodian of the Public Seal, as with other nations like Uganda, Tanzania and Seychelles, with powers to appoint a person holding service to be the custodian and to give directions as to the manner it will be kept and used.

Ms. Wanjau has also proposed an Enactment of the Public Seal Act, which will enable development of regulations governing the description, design, use, custody, authentication, restriction and display thereof.

Currently, the custody of the seal of the Government of Kenya, is with the Attorney General,an office whose current holder is Justin Muturi.

This proposal if goes through will see the public seal domiciled in the office of the President, away from the office of the Attorney General which it currently sits.
