Popular Kenyan actress Jackie Matubia has sparked online debate after sharing how she lost Ksh 7,000 in an M-Pesa transaction error when the recipient declined to return the money.
According to Jackie, the incident occurred while she was making a payment to a businesswoman following a transaction. She later realized that she had mistakenly sent the money to the wrong number after mixing up the last digit. By the time she noticed the error, the funds had already been transferred.
She explained that the payment was processed through her bank at 10:54 a.m., and she only discovered the mistake later. Jackie said she understood that recovering the money through the bank would be difficult.
After seeing the recipient’s full name on M-Pesa, she attempted to contact the woman, hoping she would agree to reverse the transaction. However, the calls reportedly went unanswered, and the phone was eventually switched off. Jackie said she initially believed the recipient would act in good faith, but after speaking to her once, she felt the woman was being evasive before becoming unreachable.
When she reached out to the bank for assistance, she was informed that the money had already been withdrawn or used. The loss frustrated her, particularly because the funds were meant as a refund to a business owner.
Jackie expressed disappointment that the recipient refused to return the Ksh 7,000, noting that it is a substantial amount given the current economic climate. She said she has considered reporting the matter to the police but feels torn due to her personal beliefs.
The actress has since asked her fans for advice on how to handle the situation as she tries to move past the incident. Her experience has reignited conversations about mobile money transfer mistakes and the importance of honesty when funds are sent to the wrong number.
