Laikipia East Member of Parliament Mwangi Kiunjuri was interrupted by a bishop during a speech at the burial of Deborah Wanjiru Mariru in Ng’arua, Laikipia County, on January 29, 2025.
Kiunjuri, a supporter of President William Ruto, took the opportunity to criticize the security situation during the leadership of former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta, both of whom are from the Mt. Kenya region.
Kiunjuri claimed that the region faced insecurity under Uhuru’s administration but praised Ruto for restoring peace and stability, despite not being from the area. He urged the people of Laikipia to be grateful for the progress made under Ruto’s government.
However, as Kiunjuri continued, a bishop seated behind him stood up and interrupted his speech. Initially, Kiunjuri assumed the bishop was asking him to finish his remarks.
The bishop, however, clarified that he was requesting the MP to stop criticizing the former presidents, who were not present to defend their leadership.
He advised Kiunjuri to focus on praising the current government instead of pointing out the shortcomings of past regimes.
The bishop’s intervention highlighted the ongoing political dynamics in the Mt. Kenya region, where Ruto’s allies continue to challenge the influence of former leaders like Uhuru Kenyatta.
Kiunjuri complied with the bishop’s request and shifted his focus to praising the achievements of Ruto’s administration.
The incident shed light on the delicate balance of political relations and the sensitive nature of discussing former leaders in public forums.
