On Thursday, May 4th, the Azimio members of parliament suffered a blow after their request to oust Sabina Chege as the deputy minority whip was thwarted.
In a ruling made by speaker Moses Wetangula, he said that he could not accept the request to remove Chege since the Azimio coalition had not forwarded the name of her replacement.
Wetangula retained Chege as the deputy minority whip, and gave the Azimio coalition 30 days to communicate her replacement.
However, this decision was not received well by a section of the opposition lawmakers, who went ahead and staged a walk out from the parliament chambers. This dramatic event disrupted parliamentary proceedings momentarily.
The national assembly minority side led by their leader, Opiyo Wandayi, had written to the speaker informing him of a decision to remove Sabina Chege from her position as the deputy minority whip. They accused her of working with their rivals Kenya Kwanza Alliance.
On Wednesday, May 3rd, speaker Moses Wetangula confirmed to the members that he was in receipt of Azimio’s letter, informing him of their decision. Wetangula noted that he would not allow the office of the speaker to be drawn to petty party politics.
