In a surprising turn of events, Stephen Gioko Mwangi finds himself entangled in a complex legal situation after receiving an unplanned windfall of Ksh 140,000 from an unwitting source. Mwangi now expresses profound remorse while in custody, deeply lamenting the misuse of this substantial sum that inadvertently came into his possession.

The bewildering chain of events took shape when an unidentified individual mistakenly received a sum of Ksh 140,000 from an anonymous Mpesa user. Rather than promptly returning the funds to their rightful owner, this individual chose to power off their mobile phone and embark on an expenditure spree.

With all attempts to contact Mwangi proving futile, the rightful owner of the funds resorted to law enforcement and the legal system as the sole avenues to secure justice for the misappropriated money. In a regrettable turn of events for Mwangi, he was apprehended and formally charged with theft in connection to the aforementioned sum.

During his court appearance, Stephen Mwangi was found guilty and faced the imposition of a fine amounting to Ksh 140,000 or a two-year prison sentence on the initial count. On the second charge, he was instructed to remit Sh50,000 or, in default, serve a six-month prison term. As a result, the defendant is now responsible for a total sum of Ksh 190,000 or, in default, faces a prison sentence lasting two and a half years. This case serves as a reminder of the legal consequences that can follow unexpected financial windfalls gone awry.
