A wave of fear may finally be lifting in Kibera after four suspected thugs who have been tormenting residents were dramatically arrested by police in a well-coordinated night operation.
According to police sources, the gang had been linked to a string of violent robberies that had left locals living in constant fear. The suspects, who had been on the radar of detectives for weeks, were cornered in an abandoned structure near the railway line that cuts through the informal settlement.
During the arrest, officers recovered a cache of stolen items and weapons that included a homemade firearm, three rounds of live 9mm ammunition, six smartphones, two laptops, and even a camera lens believed to have been snatched from a freelance journalist weeks ago.
Residents who spoke to The Kenya Times expressed relief, saying the group had become “untouchable,” often operating in daylight and vanishing into the maze of alleyways before help could arrive.
“They once robbed a mama mboga at 2pm and vanished like ghosts,” said a boda boda rider who requested anonymity. “We’re tired of living like prisoners in our own homes.”
Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei confirmed the arrests and praised the swift response of the officers involved. He urged the public to cooperate with police by reporting suspicious activity, adding that investigations are ongoing to track down more members of the gang.
The suspects remain in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court this week.
As peace returns to Kibera’s narrow streets, many hope the crackdown sends a clear message — the days of rogue thugs running wild may finally be numbered.
