Kenyan Police in Haiti

The United States has announced a significant support package aimed at strengthening the deployment of Kenyan police officers leading a multinational mission in Haiti. The mission, part of efforts to stabilize the Caribbean nation grappling with gang violence and political instability, will receive both financial and logistical backing from Washington.

This move comes as Kenyan forces prepare to take charge of a UN-approved multinational security mission in Haiti. The US has pledged over $300 million to support the operation, including advanced equipment, training, and transportation. The boost reflects growing international urgency to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Haiti, where armed gangs control large portions of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Kenya volunteered last year to lead the mission, offering to send about 1,000 police officers to restore order and assist Haitian authorities in securing vital infrastructure. The deployment, however, has faced delays due to legal challenges in Kenya and logistical hurdles on the ground.

With this new American support, the Kenyan-led mission is expected to accelerate its preparations and begin deploying personnel in the coming weeks. The aid will also include intelligence support, surveillance technology, and armored vehicles—critical tools in the volatile Haitian environment.

The partnership underscores Kenya’s growing role in international peacekeeping and the importance of regional leadership in addressing global crises. It also marks a deepening of US-Kenya relations in matters of security and diplomacy, as both nations collaborate to bring hope and stability to the people of Haiti.
