The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued an advisory warning residents in six regions of Kenya to expect significant rains this week. The weather service has predicted heavy rains that might cause floods, cause traffic jams, and disrupt everyday life in the impacted areas.
Among the areas that will see sporadic, intense showers, especially in the afternoons and evenings, is Nairobi. Kisumu, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties in Western Kenya will also experience increased rainfall.
The Rift Valley region, covering Nakuru, Kericho, and Bomet, is likely to receive significant precipitation, while Central Kenya areas such as Nyeri, Murang’a, and Kiambu may encounter thunderstorms.
Strong gusts and heavy rains are predicted for Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale, which are located along the coast. Unseasonable rainfall may also fall in areas of northeastern Kenya, such as Garissa and Wajir.
The Met Department has issued warnings about possible hazards, such as landslides in hilly locations like Murang’a and Kericho, transportation disruptions from flooded or muddy roads, and flash floods in low-lying areas.
The public has been cautioned by authorities to stay informed through weather updates, avoid flooded rivers, and maintain adequate drainage around dwellings.
Additionally, farmers have been asked to take preventative measures against waterlogging of their crops. The Kenya Meteorological Department will keep an eye on the situation and provide more information as the rainy season heats up.
Residents in the impacted regions are asked to stay vigilant, follow to safety requirements, and plan their travels carefully to lessen the impact of the poor weather conditions.
