Mustapha Hassan explained how he accidentally sent a message via M-Pesa to a person named Sabina Kagwiria on Tuesday, April 29.
The irate Kenyan man claimed that he called the police to report, the incident after the suspect failed to return the money.
Safaricom advised its customers to use the M-Pesa app to send money, in order to avoid losing their hard earned money.
In an interview with TUKO.co.ke on Wednesday, April 30, Mustapha Hassan revealed that he was supposed to pay his gardener on Tuesday, April 29.
Instead, he dialed the wrong number and sent KSh 7,950 to a Sabina Kagwiria. “I accidentally sent money to the wrong number at 12:51 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
I didn’t realize the error until my employee called to request payment on the morning of Wednesday, April 30. I told him that I had sent the money already. But when I checked my messages, I found it had been sent to the wrong person,” Hassan said.
Hassan disclosed that he called Sabina, who agreed to reverse the money but noted that KSh 2,000 had been automatically deducted by Fuliza.
Reports state that although the suspect acknowledged his mistake, he promised to return the money by Wednesday at noon.
But a man answered the phone when I called again. He was very rude and told me to go to Safaricom. Safaricom told us that the money had already been taken out when we visited them.
“The man took the phone and hung up after saying that they wouldn’t give us the money back and that we could go wherever we wanted,” Hassan said.
The victim allegedly told the police what had happened and pleaded with them to bring charges against the suspect. “This is a serious problem. I want my money back.
The police should investigate and bring charges against the perpetrator. I had to reimburse my employee, which cost me money.
Safaricom’s reaction Safaricom, the huge telecommunications company that runs M-Pesa, told Hassan to follow up with the police because the money had been taken out.
The telco encouraged M-Pesa users to use its app in order to avoid losing their hard-earned money. “If the money has been taken out, you will need to contact the recipient, or follow up with the police to request a refund. Safaricom told TUKO.co.ke to always use the M-PESA app to avoid sending money to the wrong number.
